    Using the simple peel test to measure the adhesive fracture energy, Ga

    The adhesive fracture energy of structural adhesive joints may be readily ascertained from linear-elastic fracture-mechanics (LEFM) methods, and indeed an ISO Test Method (ISO 25217: 2009) now exists for the LEFM Mode I value, Gc, as a result of the efforts of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) ‘TC4 Committee’ [1,2]. These LEFM test methods involve the preparation and testing of adhesively-bonded double-cantilever beam (DCB) and tapered double-cantilever beam (TDCB) specimens [3,4]. Notwithstanding the sound and reproducible results that may be obtained from such methods, the LEFM test specimens are relatively complex and expensive to make and test, and many industries would far prefer to deduce the value of the adhesive fracture energy from the very common and widely-used ‘peel test’. (In the present paper, for clarity, the adhesive fracture energy is termed GA when deduced from a peel test.) Indeed, the peel test is an attractive test method to assess the fracture performance of a wide range of structural adhesive joints and flexible laminates.     Cryptographic primitives are essential for constructing privacy-preserving communication mechanisms. There are situations in which two parties that do not know each other need to exchange sensitive information on the Internet. Trust management mechanisms make use of digital credentials and certificates in order to establish trust among these strangers. We address the problem of choosing which credentials are exchanged. During this process, each party should learn no information about the preferences of the other party other than strictly required for trust establishment. We present a method to reach an agreement on the credentials to be exchanged that preserves the privacy of the parties. Our method is based on secure two-party computation protocols for set intersection.     VIDA: a virus database system for the organization of animal virus genome open reading frames

    VIDA is a new virus database that organizes open reading frames (ORFs) from partial and complete genomic sequences from animal viruses. Currently VIDA includes all sequences from GenBank for Herpesviridae, Coronaviridae and Arteriviridae. The ORFs are organized into homologous protein families, which are identified on the basis of sequence similarity relationships, Conserved sequence regions of potential functional importance are identified and can be retrieved as sequence alignments. We use a controlled taxonomical and functional classification for all the proteins and protein families in the database. When available, protein structures that are related to the families have also been included.     Potential for repurposing the personal care product preservatives bronopol and bronidox as broad-spectrum antibiofilm agents for topical application

    Objectives: Bacterial biofilms represent a major impediment to healing in chronic wounds and are largely refractory to the antibacterial agents currently used in wound management. From a repurposing screen of compounds considered safe for topical application in humans, we report the identification of the personal care product preservatives bronopol and bronidox as broad-spectrum antibiofilm agents and potential candidates for reducing biofilm burden in chronic wounds. Methods: Antibiofilm activity was assessed by viable counting against single-species biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the Calgary Biofilm Device, and against mixed-species biofilms of the two organisms growing on nitrocellulose discs. Results: Bronopol and bronidox exhibited broad-spectrum antibiofilm activity that encompassed the two major wound pathogens, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. When impregnated into gauze dressings at their existing maximum authorized concentrations for safe use and placed onto an established mixed-species biofilm, bronopol and bronidox completely eradicated P. aeruginosa and achieved an ∼5 log10 reduction in the S. aureus population. The antibiofilm action of bronopol and bronidox was attributed to their ability to kill slow- or non-growing bacteria found in biofilms, and both compounds exhibited synergistic antibiofilm effects in combination with established wound-treatment agents. Conclusions: Bronopol and bronidox kill bacteria regardless of growth state, a property that endows them with broad-spectrum antibiofilm activity. As this effect is observed at concentrations authorized for use on human skin, these compounds represent promising candidates for the treatment of chronic wounds

    Exploring Motivational Factors for Dude Ranch Vacations

    Dude-ranch vacations have been popular for a segment of travelers. Research in purchase motivation spans various sectors of the hospitality industry; however issues surrounding the dude-ranch industry remain unexplored. The objectives of the study were: (1) to examine the impact of push and pull factors of motivations on customer purchase intention in dude-ranch vacations, (2) to survey the sources of information behind purchase decision for dude ranch vacations. Factor analysis and regression analysis were used for data analysis. The results of the study indicated that pull factors significantly influenced purchase intention of dude ranch vacations more strongly than push factors. ‘Value for money’ and ‘Quality of food and beverage’ were the highest ranked attributes of pull factor; ‘To enjoy myself and make myself happy while relaxing’ was the highest push attribute. The primary source of information was the category of ‘Personal source’ which include ‘Family/Friend’ and ‘Social media’. This study contributes to the body of literature by extending the existing motivation research into a new area and offers insight for dude-ranch owners/operators that can assist in marketing and resource allocation decisions

    Approximate restricted maximum likelihood and approximate prediction error variance of the Mendelian sampling effect

    In an Expectation-Maximization type Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) procedure, the estimation of a genetic (co-)variance component involves the trace of the product of the inverse of the coefficient matrix by the inverse of the relationship matrix. Computation of this trace is usually the limiting factor of this procedure. In this paper, a method is presented to approximate this trace in the case of an animal model, by using an equivalent model based on the Mendelian sampling effect and by simplifying its coefficient matrix and its inversion. This approximation appeared very accurate for low heritabilities but was downwards biased when the heritability was high. Implemented in a REML procedure, this approximation reduced dramatically the amount of computation, but provided downwards biased estimates of genetic variances. Several examples are presented to illustrate the method.Dans certaines procédures de Maximum de Vraisemblance Restreint (REML), l’estimation des composantes de (co)variance génétique implique le calcul de la trace du produit de l’inverse de la matrice des coefficients par l’inverse de la matrice de parentés, calcul qui constitue généralement le facteur limitant de ce type de procédure. Nous présentons dans cet article une méthode visant à obtenir une valeur approchée de cette trace dans le cadre d’un modèle animal, en utilisant un modèle équivalent basé sur l’aléa de méiose, en simplifiant sa matrice des coefficients et en en calculant une inverse approchée. Cette approximation est très précise lorsque l’héritabilité du caractère est faible mais elle tend à sous-estimer la trace vraie lorsque l’héritabilité est élevée. Intégrée dans une procédure de REML, cette méthode en réduit considérablement le coût mais fournit en général des valeurs sous-estimées de variance génétique.     Does a novel X-ray imaging technology provide a substantial radiation dose reduction for patients in trans-catheter aortic valve implantation procedures?

    Purpose: Modern interventional X-ray equipment employs image processing to permit reduction in radiation whilst retaining sufficient image quality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether our recently-installed system (AlluraClarity, Philips Healthcare) which contains advanced real-time image noise reduction algorithms and anatomy-specific X-ray optimization (beam filtering, grid switch, pulse width, spot size, detector and image processing engine), affected patient procedure dose and overall procedure duration in routine trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures. Methods: Patient dose for 42 TAVI patients from the AlluraClarity cardiac catheterisation lab and from a reference system (Axiom Artis, Siemens Healthcare) in the same cardiology department was recorded. Median values from the two X-ray systems were compared using the Wilcoxon statistical test. Results: Total patient procedure dose medians were 4016 and 7088 cGy cm2 from the AlluraClarity and reference systems respectively. AlluraClarity median patient doses were 3405 cGy cm2 and 783.5 cGy cm2 from fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition respectively. Reference median patient doses were 4928 cGy cm2 and 2511 cGy cm2 from fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition respectively. All differences in patient dose were significant at the 5% level. Median total fluoroscopy times [min:sec] were 19:57 and 20:20 for the AlluraClarity and reference systems respectively. Conclusion: The AlluraClarity cardiac catheterisation lab had 43% lower total patient procedure dose for TAVI patients than the reference lab; fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition doses were 31% and 69% lower respectively. In terms of total fluoroscopy time, there was no statistically significant difference between the two labs

    Image quality based x-ray dose control in cardiac imaging

    An automated closed-loop dose control system balances the radiation dose delivered to patients and the quality of images produced in cardiac x-ray imaging systems. Using computer simulations, this study compared two designs of automatic x-ray dose control in terms of the radiation dose and quality of images produced. The first design, commonly in x-ray systems today, maintained a constant dose rate at the image receptor. The second design maintained a constant image quality in the output images. A computer model represented patients as a polymethylmetacrylate phantom (which has similar x-ray attenuation to soft tissue), containing a detail representative of an artery filled with contrast medium. The model predicted the entrance surface dose to the phantom and contrast to noise ratio of the detail as an index of image quality. Results showed that for the constant dose control system, phantom dose increased substantially with phantom size (x5 increase between 20cm and 30 cm thick phantom), yet the image quality decreased by 43% for the same thicknesses. For the constant quality control, phantom dose increased at a greater rate with phantom thickness (>x10 increase between 20 cm and 30 cm phantom). Image quality based dose control could tailor the x-ray output to just achieve the quality required, which would reduce dose to patients where the current dose control produces images of too high quality. However, maintaining higher levels of image quality for large patients would result in a significant dose increase over current practice
